nonheroic protagonist. A protagonist who has character defects or eccentricities, which are not usually associated with the hero archetype (Griffiths, 2015), and who lacks the qualities of nobility and magnanimity expected of traditional heroes (Baldick, 2001, p. 13) i.e. instead of manifesting largeness, dignity, power, or heroism, the antihero is petty, ignominious, passive, clownish, or dishonest (Abrams & Harpham, 2012, p. 15). The anti-hero should not be confused with the ""antagonist"" or the ""villain"".
