box keel
tunnel which accommodates pipelines and which runs longitudinally along the centre line of a ship under the inner plating, a keel built of plates and angles in box form extending in the fore part of vessels built with a double bottom. It has the same height as the floors. The internal space is clear of transverse stiffening. It is used to house ballast and other piping leading forward, which otherwise would have to run through the cargo holds.
