    • Strain may be classified according to different criteria: deformation mode (e.g. normal strain and shear strain), recoverability (e.g. elastic strain and plastic strain), or mathematical measure (e.g. engineering strain and logarithmic, or true, strain). These classifications are complementary: a particular strain may be described using more than one criterion.
