any of various food and game fishes (genera Salmo, Salvelinus, and Cristivomer) of the salmon family, usually spotted, smaller than the related salmons and found chiefly in fresh water: the most common types in N. Eesti looduslikes vetes elavad meriforell ja jõeforell, tiikides kasvatatakse vikerforelli, teraspeaforelli ja kamloopsi forelli.
