  • a presentation, sometimes given in the form of backstory, of the circumstances and events that form a context or background for understanding the main action in a narrative. (Herman 2009, p.185) An introductory exposition in the beginning of the first act is called set-up (FILMTERM).
  • Information about circumstances occurring before the start of the script but essential for the audience to understand what happens.
  • The first act of a dramatic structure, in which the main conflict and characters are "exposed" or revealed. Also, any information about the characters, conflict or world of the play.
  • Background information necessary to the understanding of the facts from which the story action departs, such as events occurring before the main plot, the setting, the characters, backstories, etc. Exposition can be conveyed through dialogue, flasbacks, dream sequences, characters' thoughts, background details or narration.
